At Koo Wee Rup Primary School, we provide a high-quality Health and Physical Education program for every child. Our program is designed to prepare students for a healthy and active lifestyle through the development of skills, knowledge, teamwork and positive attitudes. Through inclusive, engaging and sequential learning experiences, students are supported to build confidence, competence and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. Our comprehensive Physical Education program offers students a wide range of physical and sporting experiences, with a strong focus on the sequential development of fundamental motor and locomotion skills. Learning areas include Sports Education, Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics and Indigenous Games, ensuring all students have the opportunity to explore, practise and refine a variety of movement skills. To support the delivery of our program, the school has access to a competition-grade gymnasium, a competition-grade oval, and outdoor basketball/netball courts, along with a wide range of quality equipment. These facilities allow for engaging and varied lessons that challenge and inspire students at all levels. In addition, our House Captains facilitate the borrowing of sports equipment at recess each day, encouraging active play and participation across the whole school.
Our specialist Health and Physical Education teacher, Lauren Misso, leads skill-based HPE programs for all students across Foundation to Year 6 each week. Children in the Junior School learn and practise the correct techniques for fundamental movement skills, including, running, hopping, jumping, skipping, catching, throwing, kicking, rolling, balancing, twisting and turning. Students in the Middle and Senior School further develop these skills by linking them into more complex and coordinated movement sequences. As students’ abilities progress, they are given opportunities to apply their skills in appropriately modified games and sport-specific settings.
In the Senior School, students further extend their learning by exploring a range of roles within sport and physical activity. This includes opportunities to build resilience, empathy, leadership and sports management skills, while developing a deeper understanding of teamwork, responsibility and fair play.
Health units are carefully designed to be year-level specific, providing students with age-appropriate learning about alternative physical activities, nutrition, and an understanding of the body’s systems. Through these units, students develop the knowledge and skills needed to make informed choices about their health and wellbeing.
Extra-Curricular and School-Wide Opportunities: Students are offered a wide range of additional physical activity opportunities throughout the year, including:
● F–2 Swimming Lesson Program
