Wellbeing at Koo Wee Rup Primary School
At Koo Wee Rup Primary School, we are work collectively to provide safe and engaging classroom for our students to thrive, academically and emotionally.
Ways we support our students:
- Berry Street Education Model – This whole school model is being implemented throughout 2023 and 2024. All classes begin each day with a Morning Circle. The morning circle is designed to support a positive start to each school day and improve student connectedness to their class.
- Play is the Way – All staff have recently completed training in the ‘Play is the Way’ approaches to supporting the Social and Emotional development of children. The methodology uses physical activity and games to help develop their language to cope with challenges they may face and empathy towards others. This will be implemented school-wide during 2023.
- Zones of Regulation – teaching of emotions and how we can regulate our emotions to be ready for learning. All classrooms have a Zen Zone which students can access. There are strong links between Zones of Regulation and The Resilience Project in the way they support the development of students Emotional Literacy and self-regulation of their emotions.
- School Wide Positive Behaviour Supports – This is a Department of Education initiative that helps establish positive social behaviours through clear expectations for all students. At the beginning of each school year, students are explicitly taught the expectations of behaviour. This is continually modelled by all staff and re-taught to students as needed through our consistent classroom management processes.
- Behaviour Management – all staff follow a process when dealing with incidents in the yard and classroom.
- Breakfast Club – Beginning each day with a healthy breakfast helps set students up for the day ahead. Breakfast club his is open every day for all students. Doors open at 8:15 and close at 8:30.
Wellbeing Officer
For those students who require some additional support with their wellbeing, we have our school Wellbeing Officer with us 3 days a week.
Jess, our school Wellbeing Officer, works for the organisation CHiPS (Christians Helping in Primary Schools), and she is with us each Monday, Wednesday and Friday supporting the needs of our students.
If you think your child might benefit from speaking to Jess, please speak to your classroom teacher or the Wellbeing co-ordinator at the school to discuss a referral.

Intervention
Interventions are available to students who need some further support in Reading and Language. Both programs are run by our Education Support Staff, with referrals to the program made be teachers based on the academic data and observations of the classroom teachers in consultation with the parents.
Multi-Lit – our Mulit-Lit program offers intensive reading support for children in years 3 and above who still need some additional support for their reading.
Language Support Program – This program is designed to support those students with mild speech difficulties. Our Foundation students coming into school who have some articulation (speaking) errors benefit from some intensive work around sounds and the way we say them. It is important to note that this is NOT a speech therapy service.
