Koo Wee Rup Primary School is a Professional Learning Communities school. Our staff work collaboratively to support the learning needs of all students through ongoing inquiry into specific student learning needs. Teachers establish supportive learning environments where students are supported in developing an understanding of their own learning pathways and set learning goals with their teacher.
What is a Professional Learning Community?
”A Professional Learning Community (PLC) is educators committed to working collaboratively in an ongoing processes of collective inquiry and action research to achieve better results for the students they serve. PLC’s operate under the assumption that the key to improved learning for students is continuous, job-embedded learning for educators.”
Within each of our collaborative teams, teachers work through the cycle of inquiry. They begin by determining what students already know about a learning area through a range of assessments. Teachers analyse the data and information from the assessments to identify current learning needs of students and discuss high impact teaching strategies that will support the students learning. This cycle of inquiry is repeated as teachers work to ensure that all students experience success in their learning at all levels.
Students are heavily involved in understanding their learning pathways. Teachers are explicit about the Learning Target for each session and how students can be successful through the Success Criteria. Students are able to monitor their own learning on visual prompts and other tools to reflect upon their personal learning goals.
Teachers are reflective in their practice and continually striving to further develop to support all students to be successful learners. Staff are involved in the reflective practice of Peer Coaching, with all staff committed to deepening their understanding of what best practice is and looks like within their classrooms.
Our model of instruction
In 2021, Koo Wee Rup Primary School teaching staff worked together to develop our e5 instructional model for teaching and learning. Over 2-years we refined the model and adapted it to suit all subject areas. This ensures our students receive not only a high quality of teaching in every lesson, but also consistency across year levels and subject areas.
The e5 instructional model sees each lesson flow through 5 phases of learning; Engage, Explain, Explore, Elaborate and Evaluate.
